The 49th TCS New York City Marathon took place Sunday, November 4, 2019. The marathon saw a record number of finishers—53,508 to be EXACT! (That’s 30,794 men and 22,714 women.)
The Allyson Whitney Foundation had a total number of 10 athletes on their #AWFSQUAD team with 9 competing. Donations raised by all totaled $41,028. For most of the squad, this was their first time running the New York City Marathon and a few first time marathoners. AWF runner Stephen Mulvihill set an impressive finishing time of 3:17:52!
Our feedback from our team gave us chills, admiration and our own inspiration.
“Words cannot describe the love felt running the NYC marathon. I was so scared to take this on, but once you get going, the people that are out there cheering you on gave me the gas I needed when I felt I couldn’t go on. I could not wait to see familiar faces and once I got to mile 19, I started looking for the #allysonwhitneyfoundation and was met with cheers, which just gave me more determination to keep going. Running this race for your foundation has been the best experience of my life. You truly made us feel like family. My time was slower than I wanted, but the reality is I stopped a lot to use the facilities and take pictures because…how often do you get to run over the bridges? Would I do this again? You bet! Hands down best race and the foundation is something I am passionate about. Thank you for allowing me to have this amazing opportunity.”

“Running the NYC marathon with the Allyson Whitney Foundation was the experience of a lifetime. I received nothing but love and support from the #AWFSquad, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to contribute to an incredible cause while meeting some inspiring, amazing people. I truly cannot put into words how grateful I am to have been part of this fantastic team. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you, AWF!”

“This year, running as a member of the Allyson Whitney Team, blows any other marathon or racing experience out of the water. The race for me was honestly incredible in the best way imaginable. I truly felt like the stars aligned (maybe it was my angel Al up there pulling some strings)…From the weather, to the crowds, to PRing by 19 minutes (!!!) I had maybe one of the best experiences of my life. Not to mention, my negative splits started right around the same time as passing the AWF cheer section…Coincidence? I think not! The support from the team before and during the race was SO motivating and always reminded me why I was doing it. I am so grateful I was able to run in memory of my friend with her name on my singlet. Hard to put into words just how meaningful of an experience it was for me, but hopefully the sentiment comes across. XO”

The TCS New York City Marathon was a HUGE success for the Allyson Whitney Foundation personally and monetarily. The much needed funds raised will allow our team to award ‘Life Interrupted Grants’to young adults battling cancer with direct financial assistance to give hope and comfort. Our pursuit to distribute more HOPE comfort bags will continue as well as funding innovative research.
